Admission Requirements

Admission to a Master’s Program

The minimum University requirements for admission to a master’s program are as follows.

a) a bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 from a recognized university, or the equivalent;

b) submitted evidence, usually references from qualified referees, of the student’s ability to undertake advanced work in the area of interest.

In exceptional circumstances, a student may be admitted with lower formal qualification than in (a) when there is significant professional experience relevant to the proposed area of scholarship.

Students must satisfy any further requirements set by the graduate program committee. Students whose native language is not English may be required to satisfy the University and the graduate program committee as to their capability in English.

Admission to a Doctoral Program

The minimum University requirements for admission to a doctoral program are as follows.

a) either

i) a master’s degree from a recognized university, or the equivalent, or

ii) a bachelor’s degree, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5, from a recognized university, or the equivalent, or

iii) completion of at least 75% of the course work credit hours required for the relevant department’s Master’s program, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5. All graduate courses, whether taken at this University of another university, shall be considered in the calculation.

b) and

submitted evidence that the applicant is capable of undertaking substantial original research. Normally, such capability will be judged from letters of reference from qualified referees, and the completion of a master’s thesis or other scholarly work.

Students must satisfy any further requirements set by the graduate program committee. Students whose native language is not English may be required to satisfy the University and the graduate program committee as to their capability in English.

Application Steps

1. Using the Online Application System

  • in order to use our online application system, you will need to pay the application fee of $75 CAN by credit card (Master Card or Visa)
  • if you are unable to pay the application fee of $75 CAN by credit card, or are applying as a non-degree or exchange student, or would like to reinstate your previous program of study, please contact the department to which you intend to apply for a print-based application

  • credit card (MasterCard or Visa) to pay the $75 application fee
  • test scores (if required by department)
  • list of 3 referees who can comment on your academic and/or professional skills and prior experience

4. Check Your Computer Settings

  • Windows Users:
  1. Internet Explorer with the following browser settings: Turn off Pop-up Blocker
    Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Pop-up Blocker -> Turn off Pop-up Blocker.
  2. Mozilla Firefox with the default browser settings.
  • Mac Users:
  1. Internet Explorer with the default browser settings.
  2. Safari with the following browser settings:

    Set browser cookies to ALWAYS
    Safari menu -> Preferences -> Security -> Accept Cookies -> Always Turn off Pop-up Blocker. Safari menu -> unselect Block Pop-up Windows

5. Once You've Applied: status of your application

  • check the status of your application at any time by accessing our application system
  • you will also be notified in writing by the Registrar of Graduate Studies if you have been accepted into a program and the conditions of your acceptance
  • accept or decline the offer as soon as possible by informing us in the online application system and/or contacting the department in person
  • notes: official letters of acceptance are only valid for the academic year indicated in the letter; if you are unable to accept in the term offered, the department reserves the right to reconsider your acceptance
