Application Steps

Application Steps

Applying to the Surrey campus is the same process as applying to other SFU campuses - your application is to be completed online.

If you've had past success in your studies we want to hear from you.  Follow these steps to gain admission to SFU.  If you experience any difficulty our advisors are available to answer your questions.

Note:  if you are applying after one of the above deadlines please see details on how to submit a late application.

Instructions:

  1. Choose a program of interest and make a note of its Faculty (you will need this for your application to SFU).

Note: When you reach the section of the application where we ask you for your "Intended Program of Study", we will ask you for the Faculty, Subject Area, and Program/Plan of your program of interest.  Typically, you will enter your program's Faculty in the "Faculty" field, your program in the "Subject Area" field, and the type of degree "BA, BBA, BSc, BASc" in the "Program/Plan" field.

  2. Meet SFU's Admission Requirements. See http://students.sfu.ca/admission/requirements/.

SFU has three types of admission requirements.  Each must be fulfilled to gain admission.  These include:

         a. Admission Requirements based on previous schooling
         b. English Language and Literacy Requirements
         c. Quantitative and Analytical Skills Requirements
  3. Apply Online at www.pas.bc.ca. In British Columbia, the Post-Secondary Application Service of British Columbia (myBCcampus) accepts applications for all 25 public post-secondary schools in BC, including SFU. Begin your application by choosing to apply online and entering basic academic and biographical data. Once your application is complete you will receive your permanent SFU student number. If you experience difficulty filling out the application form, please view our "Applying to SFU" video tutorial at www.sfu.ca/sims/studenttutorials or contact us for help at gosfu@sfu.ca.

Note:   If you are applying after the application deadline, you will need to download the late application form and mail it or drop it off to one of our campuses.
  4. Pay Your Application Fee at http://sis.sfu.ca. Log-in with your SFU student number and password to pay your application fee.
  5. Self-Report Your Grades at http://sis.sfu.ca.  Canadian Grade 12 students can self-report their grades online until the middle of April.  Doing so may enable us to make you an early offer of admission. Students currently attending secondary school in Ontario should ensure their grades are reported through OUAC.
  6. Check Your Application Status at http://sis.sfu.ca. Please regularly review your to-do list at http://sis.sfu.ca for any required documents we need to evaluate your application. Your application cannot be considered until we receive your fees and all official documents. Once your to-do list is cleared, your application can be evaluated. Once approved, an offer of admission will be sent by email and then by mail.
  7. Forward Required Documents to SFU. These include any academic documents required for admission, transfer credit or advanced standing (original transcripts, official test scores, proof of citizenship / landed status, or any other item requested by SFU Admissions)

    Send these documents to,

    Admissions, Student Services
    Simon Fraser University
    8888 University Drive

If you want to submit a late application for readmission, you will need to download an application form instead of applying online.

Late Application

Whether you are a new student or a returning student (if you have already attended SFU, check the readmission requirements), you must normally apply by the applicable application deadline (see above).

When applying after the deadline, you will need to download the late application pdf.  You will not be able to apply online.  You must also include the following documentation with your late application:

  1. A letter explaining why you are applying after the deadline
  2. Official transcripts of your academic record for all institutions attended
  3. VISA or MasterCard information on the application form for the application fee (or an enclosed cheque or money order).

Your application will be considered as soon as we receive all your documents and you have paid your application fee. (Due to the volume of late applications, there will be a delay in processing the applications.)

After You've Applied

1. Pay Your Application Fee by Credit Card

Log into our Student Information System with your user ID and password to pay your application fee.

2. Check Your To-Do List

Log into our Student Information System with your user ID and password.  Check the list of outstanding items on the right side of the page.  Please forward any requested documents to our Admissions Office as early as possible.  Doing so will facilitate an early evaluation of your application.

You may see the following items on your To-Do List:

  • Last 4 years of education (SHIS) is a list of the schools you attended in the last four years
  • Outline of Activities (ACT) is a brief written explanation of what you were doing while your education was interrupted
  • Proof of Landed Status (LAND) a photocopy of your landing papers, showing the date you entered Canada
  • Proof of Canadian Citizenship (CIT) a photocopy of your Canadian Citizenship card or birth certificate

Mail any required official documents as early as possible to:

Admissions, Student Services
Simon Fraser University
8888 University Drive
Burnaby, BC V5A 1S6
Canada

3. Self-Report Your Grades

All Canadian high school applicants (applying for fall term only) should log into the Student Information System to self-report grade 11 and grade 12 marks. Once you are logged in and the Self Service information appears, scroll down to the bottom of the page to "Admissions" and click on "Self-reported Grades".  If you do not have a final mark for a grade 12 course, please ensure that you report a predicted grade for that course.

Report your grades for the following courses:

Level

Courses

Grade 11 English 11, Math 11, Language 11, and Science 11
Grade 12 English 12 and three additional provincially examinable courses. If you have applied for admission to a program that requires the completion of Principles of Math 12 or other specific grade 12 courses, please ensure that you report a grade for these courses as well.

4. Mail Your Transcripts

If you are applying for the spring or summer terms, or you are not a Canadian high school applicant you will not be able to self-report your grades. Please mail an original official transcript to:

Admissions, Student Services
Simon Fraser University
8888 University Drive
Burnaby, BC V5A 1S6
Canada

Note: We receive hundreds of documents each week, so it may take a couple of weeks to match your documents to your application. Once your transcripts have been matched to your application, the item on your To-Do list will disappear.

5. What Happens After I Receive an Offer of Admission?

You are one step closer to becoming an SFU student! Once we've made an admission decision, you'll receive information about how to register for Blueprints (our course planning and financial aid seminars) and Orientation.

Once you are offered admission, accept your offer and pay the admission deposit to reserve your spot at SFU. The preferred payment method for the admission deposit is by credit card on the Student Information System under "My admission to SFU" and "view and pay my fees."

Please note: The $100 non-refundable admission deposit payment might not go into the term you intend to register in. This is because payments are credited according to the default term set up on the student information system, which only changes midway through the terms.  However, your account will NOT be adversely affected by this. Once you register for classes, the $100 credit will automatically move to the term in which you are registered.

6. Enroll in Courses

  1. Log into the Student Information System with your computing ID and password.
  2. Either look at Account Inquiry in the main window (the "Student Center") or click on Self Service in the left menu and go to Campus Finances to check if your Overall Balance is -$100, which means the $100 has been paid which will allow you to enroll.
  3. Check your Enrollment Appointment time, either in the Enrollment Dates box on the right side of the screen or under Enrollment.
  4. Check the Class Search / Browse Catalog to see if you have prerequisites for the courses you are planning to enroll in and to check the time, day, and location of your chosen courses.
  5. Enroll in classes on or after your Enrollment Appointment date.

You can continue to add or swap classes until the end of the first week.

You may drop classes after enrolling in them, but you should be aware of the potential academic and/or financial penalties, depending on when you drop a course. See deadlines for information about penalties.

Note: students in Surrey cohorts (TechOne, Explorations, Science Year One) are normally expected to be enrolled at a mininum in their cohort core courses for each term of the cohort program. See more information on enrolling in Surrey courses. Please see your cohort advisor if you have any concerns about your enrollment.

After courses are added, swapped, or dropped, always check My Class Schedule to see if those courses were successfully added, swapped, or dropped.

Can I Change My Program?

If you have already applied to SFU but have not yet been admitted, BC high school applicants can change their intended program of study by logging in to their account at http://sis.sfu.ca and clicking the "program change" link in their "Student Services Centre".

Deferring Admission
